But unlike the Cowboys, the Corvette has only continued to evolve and become more formidable with age. Birth of the C1 The first generation of Corvette – dubbed the C1 – debuted at the 1953 General Motors Motorama car show at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Though the car didn’t arrive fully formed as the world-beating vehicle we know today, it generated enough interest at the expo for mass production to begin in June of that year. The original Corvette was completely hand-built and used fiberglass bodywork. The 1953 model was commonly referred to as the “solid-axle” model, before its successor would add independent rear suspension. In all, 300 Corvette convertibles were produced for the 1953 model year – all in Polo White. The 1954 model year would add Pennant Blue, Sportsman Red, and Black color options. As competitors and copycats (or both) began flooding the market, the 1955 Corvette model offered an optional V8 engine. The V8 enabled the Corvette to shave three full seconds off its 0-60 mph time and became the overwhelming preference for Corvette drivers. With the V8 in tow, sales numbers gradually began to rise. By the time the second generation (C2) of the Corvette arrived in 1963, complete with the new Sting Ray coupe redesign, the Corvette had become the posterchild for American automotive excellence. Becoming an Icon Despite its world-class handling, you don’t become the most iconic car of the greater portion of a century through performance and specs alone. The Corvette solidified its legendary status by becoming a fixture of American pop culture, frequently appearing in movies, television shows, songs, and more. The Corvette’s first major cameo came in 1960, on the popular TV show Route 66, sponsored by Chevrolet. It was the main characters’ car, and Chevy made sure that the car was replaced with the latest model at the start of each season. In 1962, Chevy gifted astronaut Alan Shepard a ‘62 Corvette upon his return to Earth. Soon, every astronaut at NASA wanted the same. In the decades since, the Corvette has become ubiquitous throughout pop culture. Prince sang about it on his 1983 hit “Little Red Corvette.” Sam Malone pined for one (and eventually had to find the right owner to sell to) on the smash hit sitcom Cheers in the 1980s. And just last year, Margot Robbie drove a modified first-generation Corvette model in 2023’s highest grossing movie, Barbie. And then there’s the world of auto racing. The Corvette Racing team has been completely dominant since its inception, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans nine times, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona four times, the FIA World Endurance Championship, and has claimed the top podium spot at countless more racing events. The Corvette has also won the Indy 500 a record 21 times. Become an Icon The Corvette, now in the midst of its eighth generation, is going stronger than ever. A lot can happen in three months. It’s easy to forget the immense amount of momentum the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV had accrued before a software-related stop-sale in January put the brakes on things. Pre-orders were piling up for the much-anticipated electric SUV, and MotorTrend deemed it a cut above its closest competitors in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y Long Range. Now, the Chevy Blazer is back to seize its electric throne, as General Motors announced Friday it is resuming sales. Not only have the software issues that prompted the stoppage been addressed, but the Blazer EV returns with a handful of new software features. To cap it off, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year also sports a new, lower price to commemorate its return. It should be noted that the price drop is in response not to the sales stoppage, but to comparable price slashes by its Ford, Nissan, and Tesla competitors. What isn’t changing is the Blazer EV’s industry-leading efficiency numbers. Its real-world range has clocked in at 239 miles – 23 more than its acclaimed rival, the dual-motor Hyundai Ioniq 5. And with a max charge rate of 190 kW, the Blazer EV is a fast-charging marvel. Software Upgrade Enabled The Blazer EV’s cabin was one of its immediate selling points, and it’s still easy to see why. The future is evident in every pixel of its massive 17.7-inch infotainment screen. An additional 11-inch digital display gauge rests beside it. Meanwhile, navigation, music, and other apps are all handled by the Google built-in system. The Blazer EV used its time off productively, implementing even more software features. New Blazer drivers are now treated to customizable, multi-colored ambient lighting, as well as updated graphics with battery percentage display. GM also assures that it has improved its quality testing and software processes to prevent software issues from hindering the Blazer moving forward. Announced by Chevrolet today, their flagship full-size pickup — the Chevrolet Silverado — will soon be available in a fully-electric version for the 2024 model year. This fully-electric pickup will be plenty capable and ultra-powerful while offering the following features: A GM-estimated 400-mile range on a full charge. (Work Truck and RST models) Up to 664-horsepower 780 lb-ft of torque will be available with max power Wide Open Watts Mode on RST, enabling a GM-estimated 0-60 mph time of fewer than 4.5 seconds. DC fast-charging up to 350kW is standard on Work Truck and RST models. Up to 10.2kW of off-board power is available on well-equipped Work Truck and RST models. Up to 10,000 pounds of trailering capacity and up to 1,300 pounds of payload are available on the properly equipped RST model. First Look Built on GM’s advanced Ultium EV Platform, the fully-electric Silverado EV has been developed from the ground up, offering next-level capability and performance along with cutting-edge technology. “Chevrolet has constantly revolutionized the Silverado franchise to make it the powerhouse it is today,” said Steve Hill, vice president of Chevrolet. “The Ultium Platform is a critical enabler of next-level pickup truck performance for both fleet and retail customers, whether they are currently driving a Silverado or are considering a pickup for the first time.” When it debuts, the Silverado EV will be available in two unique configurations, including a fleet-friendly WT (Work Truck) model and the exciting RST First Edition. This exciting new design will still deliver the legendary performance and durability the Silverado lineup has long been known for — whether on- or off-road. Sporting independent front and rear suspension, the Silverado EV utilizes its e4WD system to transfer engine power to the available 24-inch wheels on the RST. An Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension system will allow owners of the Silverado EV to raise or lower their truck up to 2 inches. Standard on all trim levels of the Silverado EV will be a four-wheel-steering system. This unique steering system reduces the turning radius of the Silverado EV, allowing for greater maneuverability at low speed. At high speeds, four-wheel steering increases stability and handling, for a smoother ride when on the highway. Trailering with the Silverado EV will be made easy thanks to the Tow/Haul mode that comes standard on RST and WT models. RST and WT models will also come standard with trailer hitch provisions, an integrated trailer brake controller and Hitch Guidance. Chevrolet has opted to include its Advanced Trailering System on the Silverado EV, however, it will only come standard on RST models. Remarkable Performance You will never have to worry about waiting around for a charge with the all-new Silverado EV. Both the RST and WT models of the Silverado EV will come standard with public DC fast charging capabilities. With public DC fast charging, you can add up to 100-miles of range to your charge in just 10 minutes. Whether you’re on a weekend getaway or the worksite, the Silverado EV allows you to bring power with you, thanks to the available PowerBase charging system and accessory power bar. With PowerBase, Silverado EV customers will be able to enjoy up to 10 power outlets, which provide a total of 10.2kW of all-electric power. Looking for a place to charge your Silverado EV? No sweat! Simply open the myChevrolet Mobile App and use the built-in Energy Assist feature. Designed for peak performance and functionality, the Silverado EV has been carefully designed down to the very last detail. “We had no constraints when it came to designing the Silverado EV with dramatic style and flexible utility because we didn’t need to work around a traditional propulsion system,” said Phil Zak, executive director of Chevrolet Design. “The Ultium Platform allowed us to redefine what it means to offer expansive new storage and utility possibilities.” An athletic, yet capable aesthetic has been achieved on the exterior of the Silverado EV, giving it a unique and futuristic look. Careful consideration went into designing the body of the Silverado EV, with an aerodynamic front-end for reduced drag and turbulence. With such a sleek design, the Silverado EV has an unparalleled range for a fully-electric pickup. The Silverado EV will be exclusively offered in Crew Cab models, with a large second-row that pushes rearward to comfortably accommodate passengers over 6 feet tall. This design choice was made in favor of shortening the front overhang of the Silverado EV, giving it a more aggressive look as well as more space. Silverado EV owners will also be able to customize the first-row storage available on the RST and WT models, so they can make the most of their interior space to best suit their individual needs. Chevrolet will also have available what they call the eTrunk. The eTrunk is a weatherproof, lockable compartment on the front of the vehicle which was designed to hold a large suitcase or a variety of Chevrolet accessory options. The Silverado EV RST will feature a modular console, which has a large capacity of over 7 gallons. That means you can fit a lunch cooler inside, making the day at the job site just that much more comfortable. Also exclusive to the RST model will be a fixed-glass roof which increases visibility and headroom. Customers that opt for the Silverado EV RST will be able to maximize its 5-foot-11-inch bed space with the new Multi-Flex Midgate. While open, Multi-Flex Midgate allows for over 9 feet of storage space between the tailgate and cab. The second row of seats in the Silverado EV will be a 40/60 split, with up to four configurations for easier hauling of gear and equipment. If more space is needed, customers can add the Multi-Flex Tailgate, which on the RST will allow for up to 10-feet-10inches of storage capacity. Customers can keep their gear protected with an available tonneau cover, which turns the bed into a fully lockable weatherproof storage space. Tomorrow’s Technology As one of Chevrolet’s most forward-thinking vehicles, the Silverado EV comes packed full of the latest and greatest technology. This includes an advanced software system that helps evolve the vehicle’s technology over time, creating a better user experience. Unique lighting animations will be strewn throughout the Silverado EV, such as when you approach the RST and it lights up. On the interior, the RST’s 17-inch display screen will display a large 3D animation upon entering the vehicle. Once the customer is in the vehicle, the new hands-free start system will automatically start the vehicle while the customer buckles up. A Storied Past The COPO Camaro has a long, storied past, with its origins beginning in some cigarette-smoke-filled new car manager’s office in the early ‘60s. You see, back in the ‘60s, Chevrolet offered the Central Office Production Order program, Chevrolet’s own bespoke program for its fleet customers, like police departments and ambulances. However, a couple of adrenaline-craving dealers realized they could order purpose-built drag racing vehicles through the COPO program, and thus, the COPO Camaro was born. As fossil fuels are on their way out as the dominant fuel source, manufacturers are all scrambling to unveil their own electric vehicles. Chevrolet, while working on going green, decided to have a bit of fun, one last hurrah, and built the environmentally aggressive 2022 COPO Camaro, a specialty-built race car with a Big Block V8 that pays homage to the roots of the original COPO vehicles. While Chevrolet has been making COPO versions of their vehicles since the ‘60s, this is the first time they will be un-restricting ordering, allowing customers to order these vehicles on a first-come, first-serve type basis. Breaking away from the typical limited-run production of 69 vehicles, Chevrolet is sure to please their customers as well as gain new ones with this move. Beneath the Hood Powering the COPO Camaro is a 9.4-liter Big Block V8, a cast-iron block, complete with aluminum heads, forged steel connecting rods and crankshaft, as well as forged aluminum pistons. An engine reminiscent of the original COPO era, Chevy says the new V8 “channels the spirit of the original 1969 COPO Camaro". The high displacement V8 won’t be the only engine option available, with a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 and a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 also available. Rated by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), the 5.7-liter V8 will have 580 horsepower, while its naturally aspirated counterpart was rated at 470 horsepower. With three stellar engine options, Chevrolet decided to keep it relatively simple when it came to the transmission on the COPO Camaro. An homage to its roots, the 2022 COPO will come equipped with an ATI Racing Products TH400 three-speed automatic transmission, the only option for all three engines. The ATI three-speed will be sending all of the COPO Camaros raw power to the rear wheels, a traditional drag-racing setup. Designed exclusively for the track, the COPO Camaro is unfortunately not street legal, however, it does qualify for NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing eliminators. Chevrolet claimed the GT Le Mans Manufacturers title in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship today after the Corvette C8.R started the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. This is Chevrolet’s 13th Manufacturers title in IMSA GT competition since 2001 and concludes the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R’s inaugural season. Corvette Racing fielded two of the new Corvette C8.Rs in the 2020 WeatherTech Championship. Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and the No. 3 Corvette Racing team clinched the GTLM Drivers and Team championships two weeks ago at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “The first season for the Corvette C8.R has shattered all of our expectations,” said Mark Reuss, GM president. “The success of the Corvette Racing team wouldn’t be possible without the close link between the crew and the Corvette engineering team. It has been great to watch these two teams work closely together to learn from each other. I can’t wait to see what next season brings.” The mid-engine C8.R and 2020 Corvette Stingray were developed simultaneously, and the race car and production vehicle share more technology and parts than any previous-generation Corvette. When initial Corvette C8.R design and development work began more than five years ago, Corvette Racing engineers worked closely alongside Corvette production personnel. Within the last 18 months, track testing began with a heavy emphasis on wind tunnel and simulation testing. Chevrolet swept the three full-season GTLM titles for the third time in five years. This is only the second time that a first-year Corvette race car has won an IMSA championship. In 2005, Corvette C6.R won the American Le Mans Series championship during its first season. Corvette Racing captured six victories leading into Sebring. Garcia and Taylor gave the Corvette C8.R its first victory at Daytona International Speedway in July, Corvette Racing’s 100th IMSA win. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner won the next race in the No. 4 Corvette C8.R with Garcia and Taylor in second – the first 1-2 finish for the C8.R.
