Americans have been crazy for cars since the first horseless carriage was displayed. On Car Collector Appreciation Day this July 12 th, we look at some of the most unique classic GMC trucks to date! The stylish trucks featured an 85 hp 228 cu. in. inline six-cylinder engine, a four-speed manual transmission, and four-wheel hydraulic brakes to tackle demanding jobs. The 1949 GMC 150 wasn’t just practical—it also boasted chrome front and rear bumpers, a heater/defroster, and optional eye-catching two-tone paint, making it as stylish as it was robust for its time. Today, it remains a favorite among car collectors, offering a rewarding return on investment for restoration enthusiasts. 1991 GMC Syclone At the time of its production debut, the 1991 GMC Syclone was named the fastest stock pickup truck in the world, boasting a 0 to 60 of 4.3 seconds. With a 4.3L turbocharged V6 engine, automatic transmission, and an AWD driveline, the Syclone was made for speed. It was also the first production truck to receive a 4-wheel anti-lock braking system. Only 2,998 Syclones were ever built, making this scarce jewel incredibly rare to collectors everywhere. This fine vehicle is a great example of a high-performance vehicle that set new standards in speed, power, and driving experience. 1991 GMC Sierra 2500 “Everything you want in a full-size pickup and a whole lot more”. The 1991 GMC Sierra 2500 was a rugged vehicle with impressive features for the time. Power door locks and windows, a striking luxurious custom vinyl seat in garnet among other colors, and dual-zone climate control were much coveted features not yet widely available. Under the hood, the truck offered a base engine putting out 200 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The biggest of three available gasoline units, a 6.0-liter V8 growled at 300 hp and 355 lb-ft. of torque. Its striking side-line design and power make the 1991 GMC Sierra 2500 a collector's must-have in 2024. In standard cruise control, the driver sets a certain speed and the car proceeds at that speed until the driver changes speed or slows down. In Adaptive Cruise Control, the vehicle automatically changes cruise speeds through a driver-selected following gap. This means the vehicle knows how to change speeds if it comes up on another car and will follow a certain distance away as set by the Gap setting. If no cars are ahead, your GMC vehicle will continue at the previously set cruise control speed. Say goodbye to stressful merging and repetitive speed changes during your road trips. The Early Years of William Durant Long before the inception of GM, GMC, or even the automotive sector, William Durant made an unconventional start. Opting out of formal education, he ventured into lumber stacking and cigar sales. While this might not seem like the ideal foundation for a future titan of the American auto industry, Durant's entrepreneurial spirit shone through. He gradually ascended the ranks, transitioning into a partnership at an insurance agency before venturing into the realm of automobiles. Armed with nothing more than two carts and a design patent, Durant notched a significant achievement, clinching a blue ribbon and securing cart orders. Within a mere fifteen years, the Durant-Dort Carriage Company burgeoned from a modest investment into a two-million-dollar enterprise, earning the distinction of being the largest vehicle manufacturer in the U.S. at its Flint, Michigan manufacturing hub. Witnessing the burgeoning popularity of horseless carriages in the U.S., Durant found himself at the forefront of the nascent auto industry. When James Whitling of Flint Wagon Works acquired Buick, he entrusted Durant with the task of steering the company's fortunes. Within a brief span of eight years, Buick's production eclipsed that of both Ford and Cadillac combined under Durant's astute leadership. The Rise of the GMC Powerhouse Did you know that General Motors once came close to acquiring Ford? Following a failed merger attempt involving multiple stakeholders, Durant conceived a novel strategy—to amalgamate Buick and Oldsmobile under a fresh brand christened General Motors. Established on September 16th, 1908, GM swiftly gained momentum, prompting Henry Ford to entertain the notion of selling his company merely a year later. However, an unforeseen hurdle arose when a bank committee vetoed the deal, altering the course of automotive history. One can only speculate on the ramifications had Ford become a subsidiary of GMC. Undeterred by this setback, Durant pressed ahead with GM, embarking on an acquisition spree akin to today's startups and small businesses. Within a scant sixteen months, Durant had amassed 22 companies under the GM banner. Among the noteworthy additions were Oakland (later Pontiac) and McLaughlin (later GM Canada), bolstering the existing Buick, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile brands under the General Motors umbrella. While bankers remained skeptical, dismissing personal automobiles as fleeting trends, Durant remained steadfast in his conviction. Contrary to their skepticism, Durant foresaw a future where half a million automobiles would be manufactured and sold annually—a prophecy that materialized. The Later Years Despite encountering headwinds as larger vehicle models fell out of favor, Durant's ingenuity prevailed yet again. Partnering with Louis Chevrolet, Durant leveraged the Buick brand to reignite interest through America's road races. Harnessing this momentum and reclaiming control, GM burgeoned eightfold from its previous state under bank management. However, Durant's trajectory was stymied by the advent of World War I and the Great Depression. Under Durant's stewardship, GM attained numerous milestones, including pioneering innovations such as the electric starter, automatic transmission, catalytic converter, and airbags—first featured in the 1970 Cadillac, Buick, and Oldsmobile models. GM continues to uphold its legacy of excellence, pioneering the electric vehicle market with groundbreaking vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt, the first Extended Range Electric Vehicle. The Chevrolet Corvette – America's Sports Car – has been voted the most iconic car of the past 75 years by a MotorTrend readers’ poll. Like America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys, it’s a title that’s never truly in jeopardy of being relinquished. But unlike the Cowboys, the Corvette has only continued to evolve and become more formidable with age. Birth of the C1 The first generation of Corvette – dubbed the C1 – debuted at the 1953 General Motors Motorama car show at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Though the car didn’t arrive fully formed as the world-beating vehicle we know today, it generated enough interest at the expo for mass production to begin in June of that year. The original Corvette was completely hand-built and used fiberglass bodywork. The 1953 model was commonly referred to as the “solid-axle” model, before its successor would add independent rear suspension. In all, 300 Corvette convertibles were produced for the 1953 model year – all in Polo White. The 1954 model year would add Pennant Blue, Sportsman Red, and Black color options. As competitors and copycats (or both) began flooding the market, the 1955 Corvette model offered an optional V8 engine. The V8 enabled the Corvette to shave three full seconds off its 0-60 mph time and became the overwhelming preference for Corvette drivers. With the V8 in tow, sales numbers gradually began to rise. By the time the second generation (C2) of the Corvette arrived in 1963, complete with the new Sting Ray coupe redesign, the Corvette had become the posterchild for American automotive excellence. Becoming an Icon Despite its world-class handling, you don’t become the most iconic car of the greater portion of a century through performance and specs alone. The Corvette solidified its legendary status by becoming a fixture of American pop culture, frequently appearing in movies, television shows, songs, and more. The Corvette’s first major cameo came in 1960, on the popular TV show Route 66, sponsored by Chevrolet. It was the main characters’ car, and Chevy made sure that the car was replaced with the latest model at the start of each season. In 1962, Chevy gifted astronaut Alan Shepard a ‘62 Corvette upon his return to Earth. Soon, every astronaut at NASA wanted the same. In the decades since, the Corvette has become ubiquitous throughout pop culture. Prince sang about it on his 1983 hit “Little Red Corvette.” Sam Malone pined for one (and eventually had to find the right owner to sell to) on the smash hit sitcom Cheers in the 1980s. And just last year, Margot Robbie drove a modified first-generation Corvette model in 2023’s highest grossing movie, Barbie. And then there’s the world of auto racing. The Corvette Racing team has been completely dominant since its inception, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans nine times, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona four times, the FIA World Endurance Championship, and has claimed the top podium spot at countless more racing events.
